Anatomy is the study of the structures of a body and the relationship of its constituent parts to each other. There are five anatomical divisions of the body that are studied systematically. 1.Arthrology , which is the study of joints 2.Osteology , which is the study of bones. 3.Myology, which is the study of muscles. 4.Neurology, which is the study of the nervous system. 5.Splanchnology, which is the study of different organs. The terms that pertain to anatomy are as follows: Anatomical Position is the posture that is assumed when a human being stands erect. Their eyes are looking forward, their arms are placed by their sides of the body with palms off each hand facing forward. Their head is held erect. Asymmetrical is structures which are not arranged identically, I.E. liver, spleen, etc. Anterior and Posterior are synonymous with ventral and dorsal. anterior indicates anything in front and posterior indicates behind. Deep indicates into the body. Distal denotes a distance from a given point. Inferior denotes a relatively low position. Internal & external are terms used to describe the relative distance of an organ or structure from the center of activity. Medial Plane or Medially signifies the various parts of the body that are in relation to certain unseen lines or planes throughout the body. The medial plane runs through the center of the body. Any body part lying nearer to the medial plane of the body is called “medially”. Parts that are situated away from the medial place are referred to as laterally. Proximal denotes anything near a given point. Superficial indicates something that is on or near the body’s surface. Superior indicates a relatively high position. Symmetrical is use to describe structures which have identical arrangements. I.E. Both hands and legs.
